Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes #1

Available: 2004-11-03
Publisher: Marvel
Price: $3.50

Writer: Joe Casey
Artist: Scott Kolins

It has been very much in vogue to go back to Silver Age stories and fill in the spaces between the cracks. It is especially tempting to do so because the story telling style of thirty and forty years ago was of a much faster pace so thereÃÔ plenty of room for nuance and conjecture. When you can revisit a story and add modern sensibilities then the temptation is even greater. This mini-series concerning the formation of the Avengers and focusing on their first few adventures certainly tries to fill in a lot of little blanks while bringing current viewpoints to the forefront.

This issue features a good mix of characters, intriguing ideas and a strong concept. It is well written and the art by Scott Kolins is such that it gives the impression he has rendered every panel with great care and thought. So why is this not one of the best books of the year or at least of this week? Simply because the feeling of d¡¦¡¦vu is too strong. This is basically the Ultimates superimposed over the original Avengers. DonÃÕ get me wrong, it is done very well and at first the thought of the Avengers charter being written to cater to the military industrial machine and the politicos seems like a stroke of genius. But by the time Giant Man lashes out at the Wasp with an intensity that borders on violence I knew that I had seen this all before.
